Profile
The Department of Biomedical Engineering has 42 employees, including 34 research and teaching staff, of which 17 are independent employees (including 5 full professors). Biomedical engineering fits perfectly into the strategic areas of research and education, promoted both at the national level and by the European Commission in programs regarding new technologies, the information society and health care. The Wrocław University of Science and Technology is one of the leading units in the country, and Biomedical Engineering at WPPT has a long tradition.
Short history
Biomedical Engineering at WPPT was launched as a field of study over a quarter of a century ago, among others by the initiative of now retired Dr Hanka Karkowska from inter-departmental Institute of Electrical Metrology. The teaching support for this initiative was provided by the Department of Electronic Medical Equipment, headed by Prof. Zdzisław Karkowski. In 1998, the Division of Measurement and Medical Electronic Equipment was established at WPPT, later renamed to Division of Biomedical and Engineering and Instrumentation.
In 2004, employees from the Department of Measurements and Measurement Systems from the Faculty of Electronics joined the Department, and in 2006, biomedical engineering specialists from the WPPT Institute of Physics, as well as researchers from the University of Life Sciences.
In 2007, by the decision of the Rector, Prof Tadeusz Luty, the Institute of Biomedical and Measurement Engineering was established, and on 1 November 2014, due to organizational changes at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, the Department of Biomedical Engineering K7/W11 was established.
